Thoughts
Things start super with Chopper and Luffy rushing to rescue the kidnapped Nami. Franky doesn't want to risk losing his body because of the technology there. That would explain why he wanted direct access to Chopper's most powerful form. However, he will need more than 'super' vigor to control the powerful form. Apparently the secret to controlling the Monster Point does not lie within the Rumble Ball but within Chopper's mind. This fits well into the Shonen or “Boy” comics’ Formula where it is the character's willpower that prevails instead of a magic pill.
It is a shame that Franky couldn't have done more during the Yeti Cool Brothers fight. Though, I wonder if Franky went into Monster Point knowing that he would be more of a burden than assistance. I do not know why he did it but Franky did not hesitate.
They are pretty cool.
It troubled me to see how fast Scotch and Rock were defeated. They may have the elements on their side, but it looks like Luffy was able to counter each of their attacks. It is good to see Luffy develop greater natural abilities. . It never crossed my mind that Luffy shot bullets back randomly in the past. This could prove to be very useful in the future when fighting the Marines.
The Yeti Cool Brothers have a wide arsenal of weapons including their rifles, their surroundings and a variety of ammunition. One of those rounds includes a KYP Gas that can intoxicate a person as with Brook, Sanji and Zoro. That explains why the trio was unconscious and unharmed. It must be powerful because both Zoro and Nami’s body are heavy drinkers. Scotch and Rock must have left them there to freeze to give Caesar some live test subjects. That just means that Team Zoro is not out yet.
That is pretty cool.
Law finally explains some of his plan. He obviously had his own reason for being on this island. He has a plan to overthrow one of the Four Emperors and the key is on Punk Hazard. I wonder if it is a weapon that the World Government was developing before the incident four years ago. Did Law become a Warlord to learn more about this crucial key?
What Law says next could determine Luffy's allegiance. If Law wants to depose Shanks then I am sure Luffy will be against this. Luffy worships Shanks and I am sure that he wants to meet Shanks under more favorable circumstances. Anyone else, and Luffy may join.
However, Luffy may decline no matter what. It does not seem to be Luffy's style to join such an alliance. Working with somebody may be the same as working under somebody in Luffy's mind. Luffy has always been the type of person to pave his own way and would find a path in between affiliation with other pirates and becoming an Emperor.
The story is building and the next chapter will be interesting. Until next time true believers!

Mike, I think you are thinking too hard about why Franky did that. Simply put, he's an idiot. You know, there was a time when I thought Franky was suppose to be one of the moderately intelligent members of the crew, but after this and the whole fiasco with Vegapunck's laboratory 2 years ago, I'm had to retract my previous assumptions of the character.
ReplyDeleteIs it just me or does half the humor of this series comes from the idiotic actions of the straw hat's behavior. More than half of the trouble they get in is the result of them doing something stupid. Let's do a count:
Luffy: Dumb as a post.
Zoro: Ditto
Brook: Senile old sack of bones who is by definition, "Brian Dead." Get it? Because he has no brains? And he's dead?
Vivi: Naive idealist who could not think anything through on her own.
Sanji, Chooper, and Franky: All only sound smart when they are talking in their particular trades (cooking, medicine, and construction respectively), and all other times, are completely clueless.
That leaves three, Nami, Usopp, and Robin, as the only people with any amount of common sense on this ship, and even then, both Usopp and Nami have their occasional brain farts. I get this is Oda's brand of humor, but am I the only one who thinks the whole Six Stooges routine to be a bit old.
Anyway moving on. So yeah, I did agree with you about how Luffy would react to joining an alliance. Though, whoever it is Law is planning to take down could definitely tip Luffy's favor. If it's against Shanks, probably not. If it's either Big Mamma or Blackbeard, there's actually a good chance he would agree, seeing as he has it out for both of them. Kaido, well he still doesn't know anything about the guy (hell, neither do we) so it's difficult to say.
Either way, I think it would be of the Straw Hat's utmost interest to begin building a following. If Luffy hopes of making a stand against the World Government and break into Raftel at the end of the new world, he's going to need an army. Law and the Heart Pirates just might be a good place to start.
True. I do admit that I was trying to put too much logic into Franky's action. He has always been a power fighter and Monster Point is nothing but power. Not the smartest when it comes to normal things and this would fit into that. Actually, I been playing with the idea of talking about Franky as how he was built up to what he is now. Still, that is for another article.
DeleteA lot of humor in Shonen comics is actually based on the stupidity of it's characters and One Piece follows that cliche. You are mostly right on how each character based their humor on. You do get exceptions such as Robin from a few chapters ago which is refreshing if you think about it.
One can say that the crew members with trades (Franky, Sanji and etc) have put so much focus into said trade that it left them much or nothing for anything else. That is what I have heard a lot. The only reason why Robin and Nami (to some degree) are so serious compare to the others is because they have had such harsh up brings. Usopp is serious mostly due to his cowardice because he doesn't want to die but his base nature is to have fun which can be seen as being silly or stupid.
It looks like Luffy is slowly building up allies. You could say that he has one in Mermaid Island with Jimbei and even go as far as Vivi in Alabasta. Though, there is no support for that but it slowly looks like Vivi is getting more power within the kingdom. This could be good for once the series moves to it's final acts.
True and true.
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to think of other Shonen series I have frequented that don't revolve around main protagonists that aren't completely brain dead. I think maybe Yugi Moto from Yu-Gi-Oh (though I guess Joey/Jonochi is a bit on the dim side), and Mashiro and Takagi from Bakuman (Great series. Very well written.)
I don't know, I guess I'm still more partial to the Avatar style of humor that relies on it's good writing and wise cracks for its laughs. (By the way, Legend of Korra has been getting REALLY Good lately!)
I'm sure Oda has been building up for the Finale for a while now. But for all we know, his imagination seems so limitless, he could have five, ten, fifteen more years worth of other islands to explore before we get there.
Oops! I used a double negative in that first paragraph by accident. I should have said 'Shonen series that have main protagonists that aren't brain dead.
DeleteThose are some good examples of people who have brains in Shonen. Death Note would be another good example too. The difference between this series and those is the setting. Those are in a more real life setting compare to One Piece or even Naruto. Bleach is more in a real world setting and it doesn't have characters that are brain dead.
DeleteI do not know...Sokka's jokes were pretty boardline 'Brain Dead Humor' at times. haha Still, Bollen is funny but he is a bit on the slow side. Still, comic relief characters tend to be dim witted at times but pull though when needed. Still, I get what you mean. Korra has been very well written and I have grown very attached to the characters even though the series has been fast paced compare to the previous Avatar series. (Yes. I do watch cartoons from America still.)
We are only half way though the series and there is a lot of things Oda can pull out of his head before hitting the final arc. We are in for a heck of a final battle at this rate.
We'll both be well into our 40's by the time the anime is finished.
