Welcome to History Of One Piece where I chronicle, review, debate, and analyze the various arcs of One Piece. In this episode, I give an overview of the Alvida Arc, compare the anime to the manga, and gear up to tackle the Captain Morgan Arc. Hope you enjoy!
"Unique Ideals and Beliefs"... I don't know about that. Let's see, he values friendship freedom, and food, which is all pretty standard territory for Shonen Jump heroes. His goal "To be the very best, like no one ever was" isn't exactly groundbreaking either. Honestly it all comes down to his commitment and execution. Despite how cliche his character may be, because he takes himself so seriously and without a shred of irony, it rings so true.
ReplyDeleteTechnically, a lot of women voice young boys here in the US as well. It's not that uncommon anywhere really. Heck, both Luffy and Coby are voiced by women in the Funimation Dub, and Coby's American voice actress does an awesome job of giving him this really nerdy tone.
Actually that's one of the things that kind of bugs me sometimes. There are far too many young boys in anime (Gohan, Naruto, Ash, Luffy) that are voiced by adult women who give them raspy gravely voices that don't sound realistic at all. It's one of the reasons I love Aang's voice actor (Zach Tyler Eisen) from Avatar the Last Airbender. "What? 12-year-old boy who is actually voiced by a 12-year-old boy? What an ingenious concept."
I do agree with a lot of the changes they made for the anime. In the Manga, Luffy punches Alvida in the face, whereas here, he punches her in the gut, and it just feels more powerful. The bursting out of the barrel as Luffy's intro was simply brilliant. Though yeah, I do agree that they should have kept Coby's knowledge in navigation and the seas as something to show he was not completely useless.
In fact Coby's navigation skills are probably the only reason Luffy makes it to the next island. Without him, no Zoro.
I both agree and disagree. Yes, Luffy's personality is cliche. He eats a lot of food, goofs around, and wants to be the best. We've seen all that before. But that's not all there is to him. He believes in equality for everyone, he doesn't hold a grudge against the villains that hurt him and his friends (Alvida, Croc, etc.) and he doesn't start a fight unless people are in danger. These are his unique qualities in my opinion. I don't think Ichigo or Edward Elric would forgive the villains that wronged them and Natsu always is starting fights. I will make an addendum to the next character video but I still think Luffy's core beliefs are unique among shonen heroes.
DeleteI really didn't know that a lot of women voiced young boys in the states. From my experience, (Avatar The Last Airbender, Danny Phantom, and Fairly Odd Parents), most young boys are voiced by boys. So, that's new to me. I have only seen a few anime dubs (Pokemon when I was young, Cowboy Bebop, Bleach) and most of these I couldn't tell. So, I might have to add an addendum to that as well.
As for the annoyance, I'm not sure. It can work well in certain anime. I love Luffy's voice here. Still, I do see your point.
Like I said, I prefer the anime version. It does highlight certain things better. And yeah, without Coby Luffy would not have met Zoro. If Luffy hadn't met Zoro, he wouldn't have met nami in the Buggy arc. Etc etc.
Thanks for watching and I hope you like the new format.
I wouldn't necessarily say he was completely forgivable for all his adversaries. Remember how pissed he was a Franky for what he did to Usopp at Enies Lobby. It was only when he was in a tight spot with Lucci and couldn't save Robin himself that he was like "Screw it okay Franky I'll trust you. Go."
ReplyDeleteHachi, of all the fishmen pirates from Arlong Park, was easily the most sensitive and endearing, and yet Luffy still refused to rescue him because of what he did to Nami. It was only until after Nami had a change of heart and said that she forgave him that Luffy forgave as well.
In the Case of Crocodile, I specifically remembering him immediately refusing to let him out of his cage because of what he did to Vivi. It was only until after Jimbe gave his approval, and Ivan stating he knew how to keep Croc in line (for things that happened in their past that have yet to be explained to us) that he finally was okay working with him.
And even then, the second Crocodile did something out of line (I.E. try to assassinate Whitebeard, a man his brother idolizes) Luffy was on him like a rabid dog, as if he was prepared lash out at him at any moment.
So no, Luffy is not above holding grudges against his enemies. I doubt the next time he meets Eneru, he's going to joyfully invite him to his ship and offer him a cup of tea.
Also, Timmy Turner was voiced by a women. All the Rugrats were voiced by women, and the whole joke of Aang being played by a woman in the Ember Island Players episode was made in reference to how many young boy heroes are played by women.
I really have no problem with Luffy here being voiced by an older woman, one because Tanaka is just that freaking talented, and two, since the show has gone on so damn long (13 years and counting) with would be hard to find a male voice that could consistently sound 17 all those years.
