History Of One Piece: The Alvida Arc Part 3

Welcome to History Of One Piece, where I chronicle, review, debate, and analyze the various arcs of One Piece. In this episode, I conclude the recap of The Alvida Arc and delve further into the philosophy of these characters. Hope you enjoy!

  1. And so, a boy aspiring to be a Pirate beats up a bunch of other pirates to save a boy aspiring to be a marine. That...makes perfect sense?

Congrats on finishing the first Arc. If I may give one more piece of advice that I think is very important, it's pacing. Its clear that you are fans of Linkara and JO (whose Digimon retrospectives are amazing by the way), and the next thing I would try to learn from them is to keep up the pace. They give out vast amounts of information on whatever series their viewing (just as much if not more than you here) and they do it without having to pause the video and explain in detail why every single minute is important.

And I guess that's the one thing that really made this video start to drag. So many of your commentary is too long and too slow to give the slightest bit of information, in which half the time your just repeating what we were told from the footage.

Examples: Explaining the Devil Fruits could have been accomplished in half the time. "Okay, so Magic Fruits give super powers in this world. Simple enough. There's a bit more too it than that, but the next arc will go into further detail."

The scene with Nami, the way you cut there kind of killed the mood, because we were discovering the importance of that scene for ourselves. A simple text that said "Foreshadowing Much?" would have sufficed. Or if you really felt the need to speak, it probably would have worked better to speak briefly, maybe give a sarcastic quip like "Given the amount of focus the animation is putting on this one encounter, I can surmise that we are never going to run unto this girl ever again."

Explaining that the Grand Line is a dangerous place and that Luffy is going to have to go there was pretty pointless.

One thing you might want to consider doing is to approach the video the way Linkara and JO do it where you run through and explain the details of the Plot, and save all Character details for the end of the arc.

    1. lol, I see your point about Luffy but I don't think he sees pirates as being bad. It's possible that he thinks marines and pirates can coexist without conflict. Either that or he just wants to help out a person in need. Luffy sees the potential for good in everybody, which is a bit naive I'll admit but it does explain why he'd help Coby.

Thank you. I do understand your point about the pacing and I will improve that for the next arc. With that being said, there is a bit of a difference between the structure of One Piece and that of Power Rangers. Power Rangers operates on a season structure and the first season had a lot of filler, so he was able to cover a lot of it without too much trouble. One Piece operates on an arc-based structure. I think Linkara was able to cover a lot more in less time but he had much more footage to work with for when he was explaining things. I was forced to pause the footage or repeat the footage when talking about certain points.

Still, I can see why it seems to drag a bit. I talked for 40 minutes about a 25 minute episode. When you look at it that way it seems rather silly. I am approaching it as an arc tho. I want to focus on how it works as an arc and that is harder to do with this first one. There are a few things I could have cut out. The small points about the swords stabbing through the wall, the continuity error, and why Coby doesn't run away could have been condensed. If i didn't mention it tho, fans would have brought it up.

I see your point about the Devil Fruit. Still, I'm a bit of a windbag. I would like to point out Linkara's SPD review where he stops for 5 minutes to talk about explosions. lol

I'm not quite sure about the scene with Nami. There are people who just gloss it over and forget about it. Because Nami didn't appear until the Buggy arc in the manga, this is something I really wanted to highlight. I could have brought it up later tho. Might have been better.

The grand line bit is pointless if you have watched One Piece. I am assuming that some people who are going to watch this are new to One Piece. I want to point it out for them since they might not get it. That's my reasoning for a few of my points. Explain for new viewers, and go in depth for fans. That might be another reason why it dragged for you. You know a lot of this. I will have to work on that in the future.

I could save the character details for later. That is something to think about.

Thank you very much for watching the series so far. I'm sorry it dragged a bit for you but then again I'm not quite as good as Linkara or JO yet. This is an experiment, so it has room to grow and improve. I really appreciate your comments and I hope you continue to watch in the future.

  2. Sorry if I sound a bit harsh.

Yes, I do remember that bit in the SPD review where he went on a tangent about explosions. And yet, that was one of the most memorable and hilarious moments of that particular review, that I didn't care if it was superfluous.

See, humor and energy make all the difference.

JO doesn't have nearly as much energy, but she makes up for it with how well her editing and use of text-based-jokes are so well timed.

And now for the Alvida Arc, None Piece style.

    1. That's ok. I understand what you're saying. I want to improve and so i need to restructure.

I have been working on my energy and snarktitles. Still, comedy is not my strong suit.

And god I love None Piece. They do a great parody. I feel they miss a few things tho.
