History Of One Piece: Dub Reactions Episode 1

Hello everyone and welcome to History Of One Piece, where I chronicle, review, debate, and analyse the various arcs of One Piece. Today, I take a look at the first episode of the Funimation dub of One Piece. This is all very off-the-cuff and opinion based. Hope you enjoy!

  1. Technically, Funimation started Dubing The third season first, and then they went back and started from the beginning. The reason for this is they were dubbing the show for TV and wanted the series to pick up where 4Kids had left.

Basically, what this means is that Colleen was already pretty well situated with her character for the first episode. Honestly, I had the same reaction of her voice that you did. It sounded really off but it started to grow on me. While I would have appreciated them getting a male voice actor, but it would be really really hard to find a guy that could sound universally 17 for over 15 years of voicing the character.

I LOVED Coby's voice. He sounds so nerdy and perfect. The "I hate people like you," line, I actually liked the way they translated it. Luffy's supposed to sound like a jerk in this scene. It's not that he just doesn't like the way Coby thinks, he genuinely cannot stand it when good people have week attitudes and don't stand up for themselves. This is brought up again in full force when he meets Shirahoshi at Fishman Island. He totally lets her have it what he thinks of her, and rightfully so. She's only the most pathetic female character Oda has ever created... by a long shot.

The song was well translated, though I did notice that the sound effects were taken out of it, which I did miss.

One question I have, in the original Japanese run, is the narrator played by the same guy who later plays Rayleigh, because I felt that would make some excellent symbolism, as if Rayleigh is the one telling Luffy's story.

  2. You make an excellent point about Shirahoshi. He treats her in the exact same way. At the same time, Luffy always protects these people regardless of how they act. So, maybe Luffy is supposed to sound like a jerk in order to show us that, regardless of what he says, he will protect anybody in need. These were all my initial reactions to the dub, so they may change over time.

As for the narrator, it is played by Mahito Oba in the sub. He's done a lot of voice work for One Piece and shows like Record Of Lodoss War and Yugioh. He is not the same person who voices Silvers Rayleigh tho.

I'm currently working on the next official HOOP. With any luck it will be out on Monday.

  3. Do you intend to do more of these? Because, if so, I'm looking forward to it.
