Franky and Luffy head into the Coliseum and to find out Ace's Flame Flame Fruit is being offered as a prize.

Thoughts
 Umm...What?

The Che Guevara reference in the coverstory was simply awkward in many ways. It not the fact that Che was being mention but the fact that we are comparing a character like Caribou to the man who is consider a genius of sorts and icon. It is baffling.

And I guess that is where the humor can be found. The resemblance between Caribou and Gaburu are so close. Then you compare Gaburu's image on the flag to the actual Che image and you have something that is boggling.

It is times like this where I wonder if anybody in Japan get this reference. One Piece is a manga for boys. How many of those boys go around looking up Cuban Revolutionary Leaders in their spare time? It is like expecting an eleven year old to know the Cheers theme song.

What is there to say about this short chapter? It was simply sixteen pages. Oda's cold must have cut this chapter short. It ended on the typical cliffhanger and helped moved things like usual. It just that we could have used a few more pages. Maybe two more page would have made the transition from Luffy and Franky going from the bar to the scene with the Doflamingo thug scene a bit smoother.

Personally I got a little lost as we saw Franky and Luffy questioning the thug out of nowhere. I thought for a moment that the henchman they had cornered was the person who stole Zoro's swords. Explaining how they got to the henchman would have strengthen Franky's statement a bit better then leaving it sounding out of place and confusing.

Our mysterious swordsman is quite the powerful man. Not only does he has the skill but he can pay the bills for the damages he created. We do not have a confirmation but he is looking like to be Admiral Fujitora. His name matches up and the bartender was surprise that a blind swordsman was able to pay for the damages.

The curious thing is that Fujitora simply allow Luffy to run off. I wonder what kind of Justice he follows. Is it a "Wait and See" type Justice? Maybe he didn't even reveal himself because he was undercover. This must be an influence from the Japanese actor that Fujitora is based on.

We got some set up as now our Factory Searching and Rescuing Team has been split up. One is solving the mystery of the fairies and the other about to take part in a tournament. I hope this tournament thing doesn't last too long because Shonen Fight manga and tournaments don't have a good reputation. I should trust Oda that he would do tournament in a fun and entertaining way but I am worry. Especially if Oda will have no problem jumping between one thing and another thus dragging out the fight between three chapters because he wants to show what Nami is doing.

Who would be correct in Luffy's response to the Flame Flame Fruit? Would he care? Would he not? Simply wait until next week!

Until next time true believers!

  1. Well if that blind guy was Admiral Fujitora, maybe he didn't capture Luffy because, oh I don't know, HE'S BLIND! Therefore how would he know the man who helped him was Luffy in the first place? And even if he's not really blind or has some sort of sixth sence or another way of seeing. Luffy and is in disguise and never in that bar scene referred to himself by name.

I do agree that some of the panels did feel rushed in this chapter, though I suppose that's something the anime should be able to patch up (if they're doing their jobs well at least.)

On the contrary, I am actually really excited about the concept of a fighting tournament. So far, with the exception of the Zoro and Tashigi vs. Monet and Smoker vs. Law fights from the last season, there hasn't been enough fleshed out battles in the New World. I know One Piece is more about the story and andventure than the fights most of the time, but I'm really anxious to see some real action for a bit.

Also, there is an actual reason for this tournament, with really high stakes. The Mera Mera Nomi is probably one of the Top 7 most powerful Devil Fruits in the world. There will be a lot of consequences if that Power falls in the hands of someone who will use it less nobly than Ace did. It's not like the tournament in Fairy Tail where the only purpose was for guilds to show off how awesome they were. That's why tournaments in most Shonen anime have a bad reputation, because they have no real stakes. This tournament has already covered that, and it hasn't even started.

In my opinion, I imagined that last scene at the collusium with the commentator sounding like the announcer of the Probending circuit from The Legend of Korra. Anyone remember that?

    1. Assuming that the guy is Fujitora, I trust anybody who made it to the rank of Admiral to be more then meets the eye. He sounded that he had an idea on who Luffy was. "Fujitora" at least had enough sense to not cause too much of a scene seeing that he only gave the bartender a billing address. Maybe the disguise had messed up this Haki (because haki is everywhere now!) sensing abilities but he had a feeling.

The anime tend to do a good job in expanding material. The question is if there is enough material to expand upon for a full episode. Then again, we have gotten half chapters as full episodes.

The way you say it, that is an exciting reason to look forward to the tournament. We will have some full out fights that last more then a punch. I do hope that Oda would make a nice twist that will make it interesting.

I remember that but I wasn't thinking of Korra. The announcer in my head was more of the classic ones like from WWE with NBA hype music in the background.
