Thoughts

I have said this before and I will say it again. I dislike it when Oda hops from one scene to the next within a chapter. It simply done to tease the readers and nothing ever gets resolved. The story is forced to go into a snail's pace. We simply get bones with little meat on them.

Notice that Sanji's scene from the chapter were missing from the summary above? That is because nothing happen that was worth mentioning in that scene. So he one hit KO a sniper and doing the gag where he writes to Robin and Nami. That is about it but nothing really happen and could have used for another chapter where it could have been fleshed out and helped move the subplot. Instead we get a tiny bit of what Sanji was doing just like everybody else that goes nowhere.

Apparently robes with "Gas Gas" are consider fashionable and common.

If the chapter simply focus upon the events at the Corrida Coliseum, Caesar Hand-off Team and ended with the Thousand Sunny then I feel that this would have been a strong chapter. There is no way to know if what happens next for those scenes would make it possible to put in this chapter but if those first two scenes were simply fleshed out a bit more then use the Sunny scene as the cliffhanger for this chapter then it would have been a good chapter. Instead we get six cliffhangers from tiny morsels.

It was nice that we got a few confirmations such as who was Fujitora. We got a look at his character as well by what he said. Sounds like he the type of guy who has "Caring Justice". He wants to capture the bad guys but doesn't want to harm innocent people. A surprising choice if Sakazuki chose him. You would think Sakazui would want somebody who has similar ideals to him. He is an interesting choice for an Admiral.

Things did took an interesting turn on the last page as we saw Bartoloemo beat up Maynard. It is a shame  that this chapter was named after Maynard and we see that he is out of commission. Either he will come back later or simply a one shot character. At least we know taht Baroloemo is a person that we should keep an eye on.

We were introduce to a lot of subplots which was the purpose of this chapter. I dislike it and hope we do not see chapter structured like this again in the arc. I rather have four or five pages of Sanji antics then less then a page and half of it. We are going somewhere but hopefully it will not be slow but if this is how the next few chapters are going to be then I guess we are.

We got Marines, the Government, Doflamingo, Devil Fruits and Luffy all in the mix. Lets put things into a higher speed because this arc could be something really good.

On a different note, the spiked masked that one of the men who had cornered Kinemon looks familiar. Can somebody leave a comment on what that person is referencing?

Until next time true believers!

  1. I wish I could figure out that mask myself, but the closest thing I can think of is Penance from Marvel Comics.

One thing to consider about Sakazuki's choices is that he is dealing with one of the most dangerous pirate eras in history right now. The first and foremost priority on his mind is strength and power. Despite whatever morals or ideals of justice you have, if you have power and SOME sense of justice, he will find a way to work with you, and something tells me that Fugitora is most definitely a force to be reckoned with.

Case and point, remember the Navarone Arc after Skypeia in the anime? They mentioned that Jonathan was one of Sakazuki's protégé, despite having a very moral sense of justice. Jonathan is an incredibly brilliant strategist, and would have even caught the Straw hats on his own had it not been for that moron inspector's interference. Jonathan is just about one of the most memorable non-cannon characters of the series, so it makes sense that Sakazuki appointed him as vice admiral.

    1. He does look like him but I have never heard of Penance before until you mention him. (My knowledge of comic books is limited when it comes to Marvel.)

That is true and I did consider that. He wants to have a wide range of "tools" in his shed if he has to deal with the wave of pirates that has stared since Marineford.
