Manga: Chapter 706 (SPOILERS!)

SPOILERS!

Having a bad day? Don't pout! Read One Piece each week in Weekly Shonen Jump!

Continuing from last week, Bartolomeo is formally introduced to us as a vicious rising star who has skewered pirates and has killed several innocent civilians. Nobody seems to like him because he gets booed as he enters the ring in the Corrida Colosseum.

Just to shut them up, Bartolomeo throws something into the crowd which they think is a bomb but turns out to be just a ball. Yet, he apparently doesn't care what the crowd thinks of him...okay.

The announcer is introducing "the polar opposite of Bartolomeo" who is very dedicated to Doflamingo, brought back a giant pillar of gold from another country and swore allegiance to him. The crowd as well as myself, already know who this is and start to cheer for him while I grind my teeth.

Class act.

Inside the Colosseum, the injured are being brought to the infirmary and we now have a reunion between Luffy and Bellamy who seems to see through Luffy's disguise. Apparently Bellamy is not in this tournament for the Flame-Flame Fruit but simply to win. Not only that, but he also went to Skypiea at some point and underwent a "memorphosis" when he and his crew returned.

When Luffy asks if he did anything to the Skypieans, Bellamy doesn't answer but does tell Luffy that he doesn't hold a grudge against him anymore and just wants to be by Doflamingo's side. I seriously cannot tell if Bellamy is being sincere here or if he's just being the same old jerk that he was in Jaya.

Dammit Bellamy! What did you do?!

Bellamy enters the ring and is greeted with a thunderous applause from the crowds. A jealous Cavendish asks Luffy which block he's in and we see some of the contenders in the blocks that Luffy, Cavendish, Rebecca and Bellamy will be fighting in. Oda is introducing a LOT of characters, too many to list here. Whether or not these characters will even see past the arc remains to be seen.

B Block battle royale (the block in which Bellamy and Bartolomeo are fighting in) begins and the fighting breaks out immediately. Three of the contenders; Elizabello II (king of the Prodence Kingdom), his tactician Dagama and Tank Depalto (soldier in Dressrosa's self defence army) decide to take down Bellamy first since eliminating the strongest first will leave all of the weaker contenders.

The chapter ends with a confused Bellamy, Bartolomeo saying that this isn't a battle royale anymore and Dagama saying that they can complain but all that matters in the end is whoever is left standing.

Whatever you say Dr Robotnik

Honestly I'm a little half and half on this chapter. Bartoloemo could potentially be of importance because he is powerful but I need to see more of what hes capable of as this arc progresses. The standout part was definitely Luffy's reunion with Bellamy. I'm definitely looking forward to the eventual rematch and seeing whether or not Bellamy really has changed.

The fact that so many characters are being introduced in this tournament is sort of a problem for me. It feels a bit too much to me because we have to remember who all of them are as the arc progresses (even if some of them may mean nothing as this tournament progresses). Its a little hard to explain but my head was practically exploding when they were showing the lineups for the tournament.

Not only the tournament but we've got other commitments for each of the other Straw Hats as well as Law and Kinemon to focus on as well. In general, it feels a bit overwhelming. Although as much as I complain, I'm still enjoying the arc guys.

But anyway, we'll have to see how this battle royale goes next week. Until then, bah bye!

Still hate you Bellamy.

  1. Now here's the thing I don't get. In the scene where Bellamy and Luffy spoke, it was implied that Bellamy may have caused some hell in Skypeia. Based on how strong Bellamy showed himself to be at Jaya village, there is no way he (or any of his crew for that matter) could be powerful enough to take on Wiper, or Ganfall, or the entire Shandorian race for that matter. Plus given that we've seen photos of Wiper and the other character of Skypeia in the "Decks of the New World" photos back when the time skip first started, and it showed that all of them were doing all right for the most part, it doesn't seem like he left them in that much turmoil.

Unless this is a trip Bellamy just got back from just now, where his bounty is over 3 times bigger than it was when we met him on Jaya. Then maybe it could make sense.

  2. Well, Bellamy could just be full of shit. It would make sense for him to bluff if he got his ass handed to him in Skypeia. Think he told anybody when he got taken down in one punch by Luffy? Probably not.

    1. But if it is a bluff, and Belamy did get his ass kicked in Skypeia, why would he even want to bring it up in the first place?

    2. Good point, but Luffy doesn't really have a way to find out if he's lying. Either way, Bellamy is still making Luffy uneasy before they end up fighting.
