Manga: Chapter 719 (SPOILERS!)

SPOILERS!

Shocks and Gawks! Both in One Piece each week in Weekly Shonen Jump!
At the Corrida Colosseum Luffy is gaining the upper hand in the battle against Don Chinjao after landing a successful hit, but Chinjao still isn't ready to give up yet.

He starts taunting Luffy by saying he should give up being a pirate because he's nothing compared to the pirates of "his generation" as well as saying that Rayleigh has wasted his time training Luffy for two years and even praises the Marines for Ace's execution at Marineford.

This of course, gets Luffy angry and the two are about to deal each other a powerful attack. But before we see the actual attacks, we finally get to see what Chinjao's problem is with Luffy and Garp through a flashback to thirty years ago.
Well that was uncalled for

Back then, Chinjao was known as "Chinjao the Drill" because he had a very long and pointy head which in typical One Piece style, uses it as a weapon to get rid of thieves trying to break a continent of ice. This is because a large amount of treasure lies beneath the strong ice. Of course, Chinjao wants to gain the treasure actually belongs to his clan and that his drilling head is the key. I think I can see where this is going.

Sometime afterwards, Garp showed up for a duel with Chinjao. The results being that Garp's strong fist squashed Chinjao's head and causes the rest of his men to retreat. Turns out I was right because Chinjao can't use his drilling head anymore, the treasure that lies beneath the ice shall remain. Chinjao gets so angry and upset that he states that he'll never forgive Garp or his future grandchildren.

Your skull is the skull that shall pierce the heavens!

Back in the present, Luffy and Chinjao finally clash with Luffy winning out with a Gigant punch. The punch is so strong that Chinjao's drill head has emerged as he falls and cracks through the arena. At first the audience is shocked, then they give a round of applause as Luffy...sorry Lucy and is declared the winner.

Cavendish stands in the sidelines getting ready to attack Luffy, while Bartolomeo says that he won't be the one to do it. The chapter ends with Jesus Burgess identifies the winner as Luffy and seems to figure out why hes here.

Oh noes!

I am glad that we finally saw Chinjao's backstory, it was simple but effective. Now its clear that Chinjao is going to be grateful towards Luffy because now he can get to his treasure but maybe they'll go a different route.

There is still a bit more of the tournament to get through and more secrets to uncover such as what Bartolomeo's deal with Luffy is but especially (at least to me) what Burgess is going to do now hes aware of Luffy's presence. We also have to have the other characters come together towards the Colosseum but whether we'll see more of the other Straw Hats or keep focus on Luffy for now remains to be seen.

So overall, this was a pretty good chapter. Again, the backstory was somewhat predictable  but it still worked. Either way, things are getting more and more exciting with each chapter and I'm looking forward to next week. So until the next review, have a good one everyone!

Well I certainly did :P

  1. I agree that it was a good chapter. Chinjao's flashback reminded me of Gaimon's backstory (the guy stuck in the treasure chest from Chapter 20-something) in its simplicity, silliness, and general..........One Piece-ness? You know what I mean; it reminds me of that early One Piece style and I like that every now and then. Not EVERY character's flashback has to be an intense tearjerker.

The only thing I didn't like (although this wasn't the first chapter to do it) was the fact that every character with Haki could do that thing where they blacken their fists. We never saw that before the timeskip and we never saw it during the Whitebeard War, but now every other character with Haki can do that move? I've never liked that sort of storytelling. I originally thought that only Luffy and Vergo could do that--Luffy because he was vulcanizing his rubber body and Vergo because, being an extremely high level Rokushiki master, was able to combine Armaments Haki with Tekkai. Frankly, I like that better than having everyone with Armaments Haki using the black fist move. The uniqueness of each character's moveset is always what set apart One Piece from mangas like Dragon Ball for me.
