Manga: Chapter 606 (SPOILERS)

The nights are getting darker, so curl up by the bright fire with Viz’s One Piece!

From where we last left off, Luffy, Zoro and Sanji have been separated from the crew and the others have stumbled into the deeper and darker cascades in the ocean. Will the Straw Hats get through this?

The crew struggles to sail through the dark ocean even with the Sunny’s eyesight headlights (seriously what CAN’T Sunny do now?) but they come across some big jellyfish one of them tries to get Chopper (who innocently thinks it wants to shake hands…well tentacles and make friends…D’AWWWWWWW) but since jellyfish are poisonous its not a good idea and an even BIGGER fish noms on the jellyfish but the Straw Hats manage to evade with a mini Coup de Burst (very efficient I must say). But the air in the ship’s coating reduces a little and the jellyfish manages to escape and poison the big fish ….yay? They realise that since its so dark some of the fish won’t be able to spot them, but there are ones whose eyesight has evolved so pretty much anything could happen to them. Brook notices that Caribou has escaped from his ropes, they think he got thrown overboard into the Deep Current but he is still in fact on board hiding in a barrel. But this easily backfires as his inner monologue-ness exposes him to Franky, who proceeds to nail and bind the barrel shut. Franky noticed Caribou’s liquid like body (which is how he escaped the ropes) so this will make things even more difficult for Caribou. I gotta say Caribou is kind of a pathetic villain, he looks menacing and dangerous but in truth he’s not that smart. Maybe he’ll surprise us when we see him again?

Caribou, you are the definition of FAIL

The temperature begins to rise radically and the crew notices a big cloud of smoke in their way Nami explains that they’re in a Deep Sea Volcanic Region and if they erupt, they’ll melt faster than the Wicked Witch. But what makes this hard for them is getting chased by big worms, big crabs, big…EVERYTHING….kinda. They see a huge light in the distance and Franky uses his nipple lights (seriously Oda, is this fan service or exposing Franky’s pervy nature even more?) to send a signal but it turns out to be yet another big fish, this time a big Sea Devil with a lantern who tricked them but they are saved by a…giant, ugly sea Giant who is the member of Captain Van Der Dekken’s crew.

I feel for you Brook. Right here.

Out from the depths comes…a ghost ship (Thriller Bark flashbacks anyone?) Everyone is creeped out…again, but this time Brook is there to be creeped out with them. This ship turns out to be the famous “Flying Dutchman”. Brook tells a story that dates back hundreds of years about a deranged Pirate Captain tossing his crew members into the abyss thus killing them all and even incurred the wrath of God and was doomed to walk the ocean forever. That captain was called Van Der Dekken, the man in the ghost ship across from the Straw Hats. He orders the giant (called Wadatsumi by the way) to smash the Sunny, but they can’t use another mini Coup De Burst because they ran out of fuel….crap. Suddenly Wadatsumi gets PWNED by the Kraken and tries to beat him some more but a voice tells him to stop and of course…its Luffy, Zoro and Sanji! All that aside, Luffy owns a Kraken…OH MY GOD THIS IS AWESOME. The 3 of them survived by taking refuge in a single bubble as the other 2 popped, Luffy even named the Kraken; Surume (which means Dried Squid in Japanese). Anyone else seeing buddy flick opportunities from this? I can see it now “A Boy and His Kraken”. Ahhh…ANYWAY.

This has not been their day has it?

Our chapter ends with a strange sound surrounding everybody, both Van Der Dekken’s crew and Nami realise that the Volcanoes are about to erupt. Overall, I found this chapter to be good. Nothing too special about it but I’m intrigued about Van Der Dekken after all, The Flying Dutchmen is a name used so much in pop culture and it usually means something dangerous. But how will our heroes survive this volcanic eruption about to happen? Tune in next time, SAME PIECE TIME, SAME PIECE CHANNEL.

  1. In Reference to Caribou:

I think it has to be understood that the Strawhats are on a completely different level from caribou at this point. I don't know about you but I'd be disappointed to see a rookie outsmart the whole crew at this point in the story.

  2. I guess I had my expectations to high for the guy even if he didn't really have a chance at this point
