Manga: Chopperman Chapter 1 Review

Look up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! NO! It’s a flying raccoon! I MEAN, Chopperman!

Saikyo Jump launched this week, a brand new magazine from Shueisha for younger audiences than the recommended age for Weekly Shonen Jump. So we’ve original manga, manga directed from V Jump and manga spin offs of the big WSJ. One of these is of course, Chopperman! Will this spin off fare as well as the omake chapters of Chopperman shown before? Let’s find out.

The manga is done by Takei Hirofumi and as far as I know this is his first manga title (someone may have to correct me on that one). The artwork is very different from the original series, but it matches the more kid friendly storyline and characters so I think that it works great and the opening colour page shows a lot of familiar characters as kids (or some who are still kids in the original storyline) so this is definitely not canon. But heck, I can live with that. Anyway, lets move onto the story. The chapter opens with health class at a school, Chopper Sensei brings out a mushroom that looks strangly enough like a lump of poop….‘kay. He’s planning on putting it in school lunches so the kid’s turds are healthy…ewwww. But Principal Nami catches him teaching…that, the kids stand up for him and even try to persuade her to try some (the hard way of course!), when some other kids come in and look beaten up.

Seriously dude? Seriously?

Chopper Sensei is on the case and uses band aid mushrooms and disinfectant mushrooms to heal them (I wonder if this world of weird mushrooms somehow explains the power up mushrooms in the Super Mario franchise, that’d be cool). He asks Coby what happened and it turns out a giant robot is causing anarchy in the school yard! OH NO! Of course if you’ve watched the Mugiwara Theater or read the omake chapter, you’ll remember that its Giant Luffy Bomber! Chopper is in awe (of course) and wants to play but of course its too dangerous and he gets angry as the robot proceeds to destroy the school yard. Principal Nami warns him that this is the work of Dr. Usodabada, an evil genius bent on, you guessed it,  taking over the world (OF COURSE!). Chopper doesn’t listen though as he charges at the robot and PWNs a generic lackey. After they make the obligatory introductions, Dr Usodabada commands his men to attack! Chopper tells them to stay back and uses his attack Kyuun Spark to take care of those pesky men! Even though the henchman couldn’t take his cuteness, it doesn’t work on Usodabada! OH NO!

This face =  PROFIT *O*

The evil doctor proceeds to attempt to pummel the reindeer and even taunts him about how pathetic he is! The students don’t stand for that and neither does Principal Nami who calls him a long nosed coward, this is enough for Usodabada to aim his cannons at the health office and warns Chopper that if he moves, Usodabada will open fire. Being the corward that he is, he punches Chopper and accidently fires the cannons at the health office. Chopper is really angry but luckily everyone is alright. With the help of an Ultimate Rumble Ball he created, Chopper transforms and tears the Big Luffy Bomber apart us all until its all rubble. The kids cheer for him, even calling him “Chopperman” now. Usodabada survives and vows revenge against Chopperman, thus beginning the story of Chopperman, the rivalry between Chopperman and Dr Usodabada and the end of our chapter.

I’ll get you next time Chopperman….next time *meow*

Now what did I think of Chopperman? While not a whole lot is explained, like how Chopper made the Ultimate Rumble Ball, how he already has the Kyuun Spark or why Dr Usodabada decided to randomly attack a school (other than he’s just evil), on the other hand we have established how Chopperman got his powers and foreshadowing his battles against his rival. So I think for a first chapter, its good. I guess since this is for children, we don’t need EVERYTHING explained at once. Perhaps they’ll explain later or maybe not. But overall this was a good fun ol’ chapter, perfect for the audience its aimed at.

See ya next time on the next exciting episode of CHOPPERMAN!
